The opening part sets out the sources of the lawyer's duty, the retainer, the fiduciary character of the relationship, and the standard against which conduct is measured. The second part turns to the acts and omissions themselves, organised by area of practice, and this is the longest part of the book. The third part is devoted to causation, and in particular to the trial within a trial and to loss of a chance. The fourth part addresses duties owed to those who are not clients, including the intended beneficiaries of a will. The fifth part deals with lawyers acting as office holders. The sixth part concerns professional indemnity insurance and the practical conduct of a claim against an insured lawyer.
